The Gospel of John is the fourth book of the New Testament and stands apart from the other three "synoptic" gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) due to its unique theological focus. Traditionally attributed to John the Apostle (the "disciple whom Jesus loved"), the book was written late in the first century. It explicitly states its purpose: to present Jesus as the divine Son of God so that readers will believe in Him and receive eternal life. Instead of focusing on short parables, John presents Jesus through long theological discourses, seven famous "I Am" statements (like "I am the way, the truth, and the life"), and seven miraculous signs—including turning water into wine and raising Lazarus from the dead—all designed to reveal His identity as God incarnate.
